About this map
Every square is the same size and sits only roughly where its country lies. The map does not show borders, area or shape; it is a way to see all 84 national animals at once.
The colours follow the animal group of each national animal. "Threatened" picks animals whose species is listed as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Subspecies such as the Barbary lion are left out, because the listed category covers the whole species, and so are animals that are extinct in the wild. "Officially designated" means the country adopted the animal by law or decree; the others are national symbols by tradition.
Each square links to a country page with the full story and its sources. The same data is free to download: national animals dataset.
