Keeping a pet-safe plant safe
- Check the botanical name on the label. Different plants share common names, and the safe one is not always the one you bought.
- Pesticides, fertilizer sticks and cocoa bean mulch can harm pets even when the plant itself is safe.
- Cut-flower bouquets often mix safe and toxic flowers. Lilies are common in bouquets and are dangerous for cats.
- Keep plants out of reach if your pet likes to chew leaves. Eating plant material often causes vomiting.
If your pet has eaten a toxic plant, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right away and bring a photo or piece of the plant. In the US you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply).
