How the data was compiled
The list covers United Nations member states only, one animal per country. Each country page explains why the animal was chosen and cites the publications used.
An animal is marked official only when a law, decree or government document names it. Animals recognized through coats of arms, banknotes, public votes or long tradition are marked as symbols.
National birds and flowers are included only when a government source or another reliable publication supports them. Where sources conflict or are missing, the field is left empty.
