Rules for sharing any vegetable with your dog
- Serve vegetables plain, raw or simply steamed or boiled. Butter, oil, salt and onion or garlic seasoning are usually the problem, not the vegetable itself.
- Onions, garlic, leeks and chives belong to the same plant family and can damage a dog’s red blood cells. Check soups, sauces and baby food for onion or garlic powder.
- Cut hard vegetables into bite-size pieces, and never give a corn cob, which can block the intestines.
- Treats, vegetables included, should make up no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily calories.
If your dog has eaten something toxic, contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital right away. Do not wait for symptoms. In the US you can also call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply).
