Can Dogs Eat Strawberries?

Why

Strawberries provide fiber and vitamin C and are low in calories. They also contain natural sugar, so they are best as an occasional treat.

Canned strawberries, strawberries in syrup and strawberry desserts contain added sugar and sometimes artificial sweeteners such as xylitol.

What to watch out for

• Stomach upset if too many are eaten
• Whole berries can be a choking risk for very small dogs
• Sweetened or canned products

How to serve it

• Wash, remove the leafy top and cut into pieces.
• Serve fresh or frozen, without sugar or cream.

How much?

One or two berries for small dogs, a few for large dogs.

Treats, including human foods, should make up no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily calories.
