Can Dogs Drink Milk?

Only in small amounts, and only if your dog tolerates it. Many adult dogs cannot digest lactose well.

Why

Puppies make plenty of lactase, the enzyme that digests milk sugar, but most dogs make much less after weaning. Undigested lactose draws water into the gut and ferments, causing loose stools and gas.

Milk is also a source of fat and calories. Orphaned puppies need a commercial puppy milk replacer rather than cow's milk, because cow's milk has a different balance of nutrients.

Risks to watch for

  • Diarrhea
  • Gas and bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach discomfort

How to share safely

  • If you want to try it, offer a few tablespoons and watch for stomach upset over the next day.
  • Lactose-free milk or plain unsweetened pet milks are easier on the stomach.
  • Never use milk in place of fresh water.

How much?

A few tablespoons occasionally, for dogs that tolerate it.

Treats, including human foods, should make up no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily calories.
